Design for Print

Primary text frame selection (document set up) will automatically carry on the text inserted into the next column. If the amount of text exceeds the space available, then another page will be added automatically.

A slug is an average of 20mm.

Keyboard shortcuts:

cmd1 shows document in actual print size.
cmd and shift and arrows, increase or decrease size of text.
(with text highlighted) alt up and down arrows, adjust leading.
(with text highlighted) alt left and right arrows, adjust kerning.

Once you adjust the leading, if you change the point size, then the leading doesn't adjust, because it there is no longer a link between the leading and font size. Auto leading is 120%.

Placing Photoshop files. 300dpi. CMYK or greyscale. Tiff or PSD no Jpegs. Actual size.
Placing Illustrator files. CMYK or greyscale. AI or copy and paste.

If you shrink the image size in InDesign, the files will be unnecessarily large, and when the document goes to print unnecessary processing will occur causing errors. Rather, it is better to adjust the file from Photoshop.

Shortcut to open image in original programme, hold alt and double click on image.

TASK:

Adjust images.

Under the links panel you can find all of the information on the images. Check the percentage to see if it has been resized, and then adjust the image size in Photoshop accordingly. Check that it is set to 300dpi. File format (tiff of psd). CMYK etc...

Resampling the image means adding or taking away info from the image. If you uncheck before changing resolution then the width and height will change to keep the quality of the image.

This time go back and resample the image because it is too large and we want to get rid of some of the information. Change the percentage to the size shown on InDesign under the links panel.

Packaging an InDesign file. PDF, smallest size to email and Press Quality ready to send to print.

Extra fonts in the uni shared folder.
